Myanmar military gets new aviation fuel supplies despite abuses

The Myanmar military continues to secure supplies of aviation fuel — involving companies from Asia and Europe — despite air raids that have killed and maimed civilians and forced thousands from their homes, according to a new report. Amnesty International, Global Witness and advocacy group Burma Campaign UK said on Wednesday they had identified more companies involved in aviation fuel transactions, following up on an investigation into the aviation fuel supply chain last year that found supplies for civilian aviation were being diverted to the military.

Japan gives $60 million to Myanmar as humanitarian assistance

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said that Japan would give over US$60 million to Myanmar as additional humanitarian assistance. The people in most of the areas in the country have been experiencing violence since the Myanmar military staged a coup on 1 February 2021 and the humanitarian situation in the country continues to deteriorate further as a consequence of the coup. Under these circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide additional humanitarian assistance totaling approximately US$60.3 million through international organizations such as UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP and the AHA Centre.

Myanmar Junta Extends Martial Law

On February 22, Myanmar’s junta announced martial law orders for three additional townships in Sagaing Region, after expanding martial law in 37 townships elsewhere in the country earlier this month. A total of 50 townships are now under martial law in Chin, Kachin, Karen, Karenni, and Mon States, as well as in Yangon and Mandalay Regions. The three townships in Myanmar’s northwest now fall under the executive and judicial jurisdiction of regional military commander Maj. Gen. Than Htike, who has been sanctioned by the European Union for serious human rights violations, including excessive use of force and an attack on a school in Depayin township in September 2022 that killed 11 children.

How Myanmar achieved the 2020 milestone of reducing TB disease burden

Myanmar is one of the countries with a high burden of TB, TB-HIV and drug-resistant TB. As per the Global Tuberculosis Report 2021 of WHO, an estimated 167000 people fell ill with TB in the country.
